YOUR PET'S WARDROBE: FORM OVER FUNCTION?
Exclusive to SPCA.com
Pet clothes aren't just for Halloween anymore! From celebrity pooches to your aunt's tabby, animals across the nation increasingly reflect the sartorial tastes of their owners, causing the pet clothing industry to grow year after year. Whether it's a starlet's chiffon-clad Chihuahua cutting a dashing figure on the red carpet or down-filled booties for your sled dog, there is a pet clothing product out there that is designed to appeal to your lifestyle. The question is, does it appeal to your pet?
While a rhinestone blouse on your Pomeranian might seem like a good idea for your family portrait, it may not be the safest garment. Some clothes can actually irritate your pet, restricting their breathing or even overheating them. Very young and very old animals are often susceptible to extremes of heat and cold, so if you live in North Dakota and you want to take your greyhound for a nighttime walk in January, it might be prudent to protect it from the elements with appropriate outerwear. But if you live in Miami and want to dress your malamute in July, you may want to reconsider.
The key to dressing your pet is not solely a question of style, it's also a function of appropriateness. Short-coated or hairless pets require protection from the cold, while the opposite holds true for long-haired breeds. If your dog is not a natural swimmer, a life jacket is a must for boating trips and may in fact save its life if it gets knocked overboard.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
Keep in mind that safety and comfort are the first things you should think about when purchasing items of clothing for your pet. First off, make sure the item fits properly; it should not be so loose as to hinder movement, or so tight as to cause discomfort. Consider how easy the item is to put on or remove. Is the material durable? Is it weatherproof? Is it comfortable? Is the fabric's weave tight enough to prevent snagging? A positive answer to all of these questions is a good means of ascertaining the value of the item. While novelty pet clothing may seem fun and cute, most pets require nothing but the coat with which they were born. As tempting as it is to dress your pet for fun, make sure that the clothing you choose benefits your animal more than your style. After all, they're beautiful just the way they are.
