My entire unit will rotate back to the states sometime in November or December, and I get very nervous when I think about her future.

Meet Lucky – one of the 80 dogs and cats on the Operation Baghdad Pups waiting list right now. Lucky’s soldiers are desperate to get her home to the United States and this is her story:

“On one of our daily missions to check to make sure frequently used routes are free of IED’s, the team came across a very small malnourished puppy. The poor baby was very skittish, and shaking. Being the animal lovers we are, the team rescued the pup from the side of the road and brought her back to our compound on the base.

The pup must have been starving because when it went to the bathroom for the first time, there were small rocks in her stool. We didn’t have any puppy food so I searched online to see what human food would be safe for her until we could get some dog food shipped in. In a week she gained so much weight, and looks so much healthier.

We named the puppy Lucky because if it weren’t for our team passing by she would have surely joined the horrible fate of so many of the dogs in Iraq. Lucky is very friendly and loves to be with people. She currently lives in my office and whenever I sit on the sofa she has to be right next to me. The little girl loves to sleep and she has her very own bed and Beanie Babies to keep her company when we are out on missions.

We have about 40 people in our compound and everyone is keeping our secret. But unfortunately, sooner or later someone is bound to find out about her. I can’t imagine what I and my teammates would do if we were forced to get rid of her. Here in Iraq people don’t really keep dogs as pets, 90% or more just roam the streets picking through trash. On any given day you may see 10 dead dogs on the side of the road.

My entire unit will rotate back to the states sometime in November or December, and I get very nervous when I think about her future. We are all becoming very attached to her and she loves us too. I am asking your organization to help us help her escape a certain death sentence here in Iraq once we leave. Lucky would live with me if you are able to help us. I hope you can help because we have no other way to get Lucky home.”
