Invitation: “Fur Free Friday” at the Montreal SPCA

Montreal, November 25, 2014 –In honor of Fur Free Friday on November 28th, a North-American day dedicated to encourage consumers to go Fur-Free, the Montreal SPCA is holding a fun and interactive event to celebrate this day and Make Fur History.

Join us this Friday and Saturday at the Montreal SPCA to receive informational material and speak to SPCA representatives to learn more about practices within the fur industry, and together let’s Make Fur History. By taking the #makefurhistory fur-free pledge at the SPCA, you can enter our raffle for a chance to win a $400 Vaute Couture gift certificate, a vegan and ethical outerwear company. The draw will take place on Saturday at 3pm.  If you happen to own fur, you can ditch it by dropping it off at the Montreal SPCA, and in exchange for your fur item you will receive a vegan cruelty-free  LUSH Cosmetics product*. Your fur item will then be donated to a one of several wildlife rehabilitation centers. As well, Make Fur History t-shirts will be also available for sale ($20) in both men and women sizes.

The #MakeFurHistory campaign was started by the Montreal SPCA and The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals (APFA) with the support of LUSH Cosmetics. #MakeFurHistory is aimed at raising awareness for consumers and the general public, as well as encouraging governments to get further involved in regulating the commercial fur trade. “Animals raised on fur farms are not afforded adequate legal protection – both the law and the fur industry treat them as commodities,” says Alanna Devine Director of Animal Advocacy at the Montreal SPCA. “Given that the use of fur in fashion, particularly in the form of fur trim, is on the rise, there has never been a better time to make the public aware of the inherent suffering of animals on fur-farms right here in Canada. We want to let the public know they can help stop the suffering of these animals by saying no to fur and working with us to let the Canadian government, retailers and manufacturers know that there is no need to cause this type of suffering in order to produce an unnecessary luxury item.”

About the Montreal SPCA

Founded in Montreal in 1869, we were the first humane society in Canada and our mission is to:

  • protect animals against negligence, abuse, and exploitation;
  • represent their interests and ensure their well-being;
  • raise public awareness and help develop compassion for all living beings.

For many years, the Montreal SPCA has been working hard with the three levels of government (municipal, provincial and federal) to improve laws on animal protection. In 2013, our inspection service investigated 1,102 new complaints and conducted the inspection of 2,846 animals, all species combined. A total of 195 animals were seized as a result of their investigations and several criminal prosecutions or charges have been brought.
