Octopuses belong to the cephalopod class, a particularly intelligent group of mollusks that also includes squids and cuttlefish.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Octopuses are thought to share an ancestor with humans and their brains are believed to have developed similarly 518 million years ago, which would account for their intelligence! [1]<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

In addition to being blue-blooded and having three hearts, the fascinating octopuses have the same number of neurons as dogs! But because their nervous system extends into their tentacles, they have the equivalent of nine brains: one central and eight peripheral. Their eight tentacles can touch, feel and even make decisions. <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Octopuses are known to be excellent problem-solvers. In the lab, they have mastered complex mazes, and in New Zealand, an octopus managed to escape from an aquarium through a drain to reach the ocean. [2,3]<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Octopuses\u2019 cousins, cuttlefish, are able to open boxes and jars. They can also remember visual cues, such as shapes and colours, and use this information to complete tasks in exchange for rewards.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Cuttlefish show amazing cognitive abilities! They passed the marshmallow test originally designed for human children with flying colours.<\/strong> This test requires a complex cognitive process that involves evaluating two options and choosing the one that will provide the best payoff in the future.4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Knowing how to handle tools is evidence of an individual’s learning abilities. Octopuses can build dens to hide in and use rocks to block off the entrance.<\/strong> These dens are sometimes interconnected to form underwater cities. Some octopuses also collect objects they might be able to use later.<\/p>

When they feel threatened or crowded by other individuals, octopuses often throw objects at them.<\/strong> A recent study has shown that female octopuses use this tactic to defend themselves when bothered by males.5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Octopuses communicate with one another through different postures and colour changes. They can even form social relationships6<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> and experience conflict.7<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>

Although they look nothing like us, octopuses can tell human beings apart and even identify a potential ally.<\/strong>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Beyond intelligence, it is their capacity to suffer that constitutes a crucial criterion in determining the need to grant them protection, whether it is their capacity to feel physical pain or experience stress or emotional, psychological or relational suffering.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Although cephalopods (the group of invertebrates to which octopuses belong) have a nervous system that significantly differs from that of vertebrates, recent studies show that octopuses feel and respond to pain similarly to mammals.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Their experience of pain goes beyond the simple reflex of avoiding unpleasant stimuli, for example. It is rather a complex emotional experience that can lead to distress and suffering.9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In 2021, a detailed scientific report10<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> on cephalopods\u2019 neurocognitive abilities led the United Kingdom to include them under the protections of the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act11<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>, which formally recognizes their sentience and the need to protect them.<\/p>

And yet there is currently no legislation protecting farmed cephalopods\u2019 well-being in jurisdictions where octopus farming is being developed and may become a reality.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
