Families looking to adopt a shelter animal now often start with a search online. They pour over detailed animal profiles describing characteristics and setting specific adoption criteria. Families then get in touch or come to the shelter to meet the animal with whom they have \u201cfallen in love\u201d with virtually.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This approach is still commonplace in many <\/span>shelters<\/span> and <\/span>it certainly <\/span>has its advantages. However, <\/span>many North American shelters<\/span> have successfully implemented new practices<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> the Montreal SPCA is <\/span>looking to <\/span>gradually <\/span>follow suit<\/span>.<\/span> Th<\/span>is<\/span> is<\/span> why<\/span><\/strong><\/span> you<\/span> wi<\/span>ll no longer find specific criteria in the adoption files on <\/span><\/span>our website<\/span><\/span>, for instance<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

It allows us to have open, non-judgmental conversations<\/strong> with potential adopters and share information: We show families how to meet a specific animal\u2019s needs, and they tell us about themselves and their experience with animals.<\/p>

The approach fosters conversation<\/strong> and builds trust<\/strong>, instead of insisting on strict and restrictive search criteria, such as \u201cfenced yard required\u201d or \u201cno children or other dogs allowed.\u201d After all, the process of adopting a living being should not be like shopping online for a TV or a sofa!<\/p>

With open discussion, families may even find that a species other than the one they had originally imagined would be better suited to their lifestyle. For example, someone might decide to adopt a turtle instead of a dog.     It may <\/span>come as a surprise<\/span>, but studies show that spontaneity is not a determining factor in<\/span> making an adoption<\/span> successful<\/span>. Adopting an animal <\/span>is a<\/span> huge<\/span> responsibility. Some people need a great deal of preparation, while others jump into the adventure more spontaneously. Careful planning can sometimes lead to <\/span>high expectations<\/span> and<\/span>,<\/span> if these expectations are not met, disappointment and frustration can follow.     No. Our adoption process is rigorous, and our adoption counsellors strive for the best possible match between our prot\u00e9g\u00e9s and the families who come in to the shelter.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    What\u2019s more, when potential adopters talk with our adoption counsellors, they may realize they don\u2019t have everything it takes to make the adoption a success.     Many of the Montreal SPCA\u2019s prot\u00e9g\u00e9s live in temporary foster homes, not at our shelter. We will maintain our former adoption process for these animals. You can fill out a form to express your interest and we will contact selected families on a first-come, first-served basis according to the animal\u2019s needs. We\u2019ll hold a telephone interview and set up an appointment for you to meet the animal.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    You can also use the Petfinder website or app or look online to find shelters in your area.
