\"Maple_fb_ENG\"<\/a>Montreal, August 11, 2016 –<\/b> The Montreal SPCA invites you to a high-impact event as part of its #SaferKinderCommunities<\/a> campaign, which aims to provide fundamental solutions to make our communities safer and kinder.<\/p>\n

Everyone agrees: Dog bites are a real public safety issue, and all experts agree that the City of Montreal\u2019s plan to institute breed specific legislation (BSL) will not really protect the public from dog bites. Rather, it would result in the needless death of hundreds of healthy and behaviorally sound dogs and puppies, simply because of their physical appearance.<\/p>\n

An interactive installation located in front of the Lionel-Groulx metro station this Sunday, August 14 from 10 am to 3 pm, will allow passersby to show their support for the saferkindercommunities.com campaign, as well as to learn more about the uncertain fate of hundreds of dogs who could be sentenced to death, unnecessarily, as of this fall in Montreal. \u201cFrom what we have been told by the Coderre administration, the proposed by-law would allow dog owners who currently already have a \u201cpit bull\u201d type dog to keep their dog once the law would come into force but any new adoption of this type of dog \u2013 even from a shelter, such as the SPCA, would be prohibited as part of the ban\u201d, explains Me Alanna Devine, Director of Animal Advocacy at the Montreal SPCA. \u201cShelters and pounds would continue to receive abandoned and stray dogs that resemble \u201cpit bull\u201d type dogs and having nowhere to go, these dogs would necessarily be sentenced to death\u201d.<\/p>\n
