{"id":28045,"date":"2019-10-16T14:30:24","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T18:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spca.com\/?p=28045"},"modified":"2019-10-16T14:30:26","modified_gmt":"2019-10-16T18:30:26","slug":"elections-prioritizing-animal-welfare-a-necessity-for-the-next-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spca.com\/en\/elections-prioritizing-animal-welfare-a-necessity-for-the-next-government\/","title":{"rendered":"ELECTIONS: Prioritizing animal welfare, a necessity for the next government"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>ELECTIONS: Prioritizing animal welfare, a necessity for the next government<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Montreal, October 16, 2019 \u2013 With the upcoming federal elections on October 21st, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spca.com\/en\/2019-elections\/\">the Montreal SPCA is inviting the public to join<\/a> it in exerting pressure on political party leaders to commit to making animal welfare a priority in Canada. \u201cCanada is lagging behind most European countries, Brazil and India in terms of animal protection. The World Animal Protection organization gives Canada a score of D, which is very poor, yet, there is no mention of animal welfare issues in this election campaign,\u201d says Sophie Gaillard, lawyer and Director of Animal Advocacy at the Montreal SPCA. \u201cThis is why we are urging the next government to make a commitment now to better protect animals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In only a few days, more than 7,000 people have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spca.com\/en\/2019-elections\/\">shown their support<\/a> for the requests made by the Montreal SPCA, which are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>End\nanimal testing in the cosmetics industry<\/li><li>Ban\nthe cruelest animal husbandry practices <\/li><li>Adopt\nstricter regulations for the transport of animals intended for human consumption<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Request no. 1: End animal testing in the\ncosmetics industry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Gaillard specifies\nthat \u201cwhile Canada\u2019s <em>Food and Drugs Act<\/em> does not require cosmetics to be\ntested on animals, skin irritation, safety and toxicity tests continue to be\nconducted on rabbits, rats, hamsters, mice and guinea pigs. During these tests,\nanimals are force-fed a product or a concentrated dose is applied to their\nshaved skin or directly into their eyes over a period of several days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several\ncountries, including Israel, New Zealand and member countries of the European\nUnion already prohibit cosmetic testing on animals. Canada must join them in\nbanning these cruel and unnecessary tests without delay. Last spring, Bill S-214, which aims to ban cosmetic\ntesting on animals as well as the sale of products tested on animals, was under\nconsideration in the House of Commons, but the dissolution of Parliament in view\nof the upcoming elections halted its adoption. The Montreal SPCA is therefore urging\nthe next government to reintroduce this bill and firmly commit to adopting it without\ndelay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Request no. 2<\/strong><strong>: Ban the cruelest animal husbandry practices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canada, farm animals receive virtually no legal protection. Several practices that seriously compromise the welfare of animals raised for food, such as being confined in very small spaces and systematic mutilation without anesthesia or analgesia, are still widespread in Canada even though they are prohibited elsewhere in the world. This is why the Montreal SPCA is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spca.com\/en\/2019-elections\/\">asking that firm phase-out dates be set<\/a> to eliminate these cruel practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Request no. 3<\/strong><strong>: Adopt stricter regulations for the transport\nof animals intended for human consumption&nbsp;\n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anually across\nCanada, more than 800 million farm animals are transported to auctions and\nslaughterhouses. Nearly two million of these animals die during transport and an\nestimated 12 million more are injured or become ill along the way. \u201cDespite\ntheir recent revision, the provisions of the <em>Health of Animals Regulations, <\/em>which\naim to protect animals during transport, fall considerably short. The\nregulations do not specify how much space each animal must have during\ntransport to prevent injuries and keep them from being trampled or gored by a\nhorn. Moreover, the maximum allowed intervals during which animals can be\ntransported without food, water or rest\u2014up to 36 and even 72 hours\u2014greatly\nexceed what is permitted in other countries. In EU countries, animals that will\nbe travelling for more than eight hours must be loaded on trucks equipped with automatic\nwater dispensers. Furthermore, while it is now standard in Europe, Canadian\nregulations do not require that transport vehicles be climate controlled or\nequipped with any kind of temperature monitoring system, thus exposing animals\nto frostbite in the winter and heat stroke in the summer.
