In response to the<i> Fido in the Metro<\/i> campaign launched by the Montreal SPCA in 2021, a pilot project was implemented in 2022 and was a welcome relief for families living with dogs in Montr\u00e9al.\u00a0<\/p><p>The <i>Fido Takes the Metro<\/i> campaign collected <b>almost 18,000 signatures<\/b> from residents asking Mayor Val\u00e9rie Plante and Chair of the STM board \u00c9ric Alan\u202fCaldwell to allow dogs in the metro. Many major cities around the world, including P<b>aris, London, Berlin, Barcelona and San Francisco,<\/b> in addition to <b>Calgary <\/b>and <b>Toronto <\/b>in Canada, welcome dogs on public transportation. Montr\u00e9al is taking an important step by allowing them in the metro.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cWe thank the STM for listening to the public and are grateful to everyone who signed the petition,\u201d says Sophie Gaillard, Director of Animal Advocacy and Legal and Government Affairs at the Montreal SPCA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cAllowing dogs in public spaces like the metro provides them with more opportunities to exercise and socialize, which <strong>reduces the risk of developing undesirable behaviour<\/strong>,\u201d says Gaillard. \u201cBy treating dogs as members of the community, we make it easier to live together in harmony.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>The timing of this new bylaw is perfect since people are increasingly being encouraged to use public transportation to get around. It will also make it easier for low-income families to get to veterinary clinics and Montr\u00e9al\u2019s large green spaces.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>However, as Gaillard points out, metro access only solves part of the problem. \u201cGiven that a significant proportion of Montrealers live a considerable distance from a metro station, <strong>we feel that dogs should also be allowed on the bus network<\/strong>, and we intend to pursue our discussions with the STM on this matter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p><b>A few rules for metro travel with a dog<\/b><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 0.9375rem; letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">Travel must take place during off-peak hours on weekdays or at any time on weekends and during public holidays.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li>We strongly recommend that you avoid travelling with a dog in the train\u2019s frontmost car, which has priority use for school groups, day-care services, people with functional limitations and bicycles.<\/li><li>Dogs must wear a muzzle.<\/li><li>Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times.<\/li><li>Any\u00a0 \u201cmess\u201d must be picked up.<\/li><li>Each person may be accompanied by only one dog.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><p><b>The Montreal SPCA offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spca.com\/en\/stm-guidelines\/\">advice<\/a> on travelling with your dog in the metro<\/b>, including how to determine whether your dog is socialized enough to take public transportation and how to get your dog used to wearing a muzzle.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2013 30 \u2013\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Source\u202f:<\/strong> Montreal SPCA www.spca.com\/en\/<\/p><p><strong>Media information: \u202f<\/strong><br \/>T\u00f6k communications 514 247-0526\u202f<br \/>Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Avon, mariehelene@tokcommunications.ca\u202f\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>About the Montreal SPCA\u202f<\/strong><br \/>Founded in Montr\u00e9al in 1869, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (now known simply as the Montreal SPCA) was the first animal welfare organization in Canada.
