Montr\u00e9al, February\u202f17, 2026<\/strong> \u2013 Helping animal victims of cruelty and severe neglect takes up a lot of the SPCA\u2019s resources. Today, the Montreal SPCA is launching a\u202ffundraising\u202fcampaign<\/strong> to be able to offer its prot\u00e9g\u00e9s the best care and to intervene quickly when criminal offences occur.<\/p>\n

The Montreal SPCA\u2019s Investigations Division is tasked with enforcing the laws that protect animals. Its intervention in cases involving offences under provincial law is supported by the minist\u00e8re de l\u2019Agriculture, des P\u00eacheries et de l\u2019Alimentation du Qu\u00e9bec (MAPAQ).<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s public donations that enable the SPCA to fund the Investigations Division\u2019s enforcement of the Criminal Code, in cases of cruelty or severe neglect.<\/h5>\n

\u201cSome animals come to us in an extremely worrying physical and psychological state,\u201d explained Sylvie Bourbonni\u00e8re, the SPCA\u2019s new executive director.<\/strong> \u201cGiving them a second chance requires specialized human resources, complex medical care and constant support.\u201d Though Bourbonni\u00e8re only started recently, she says she has already been deeply affected by a recent case of cruelty.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A dog shot near Matane: The Montreal SPCA investigates<\/strong><\/p>\n

On February\u202f8, a dog with gunshot wounds was discovered on the 6e\u202fRang in Saint-L\u00e9andre, near Matane. Images of the bloodied animal spread over social media, sparking outrage. Officers from the Montreal SPCA\u2019s Investigations Division travelled to the Bas St-Laurent region to rescue the dog and open a case.<\/strong> The pup is currently receiving the care needed at the Montreal clinic, while the Investigations Division rigorously handles the case to shed light on the circumstances.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The SPCA\u2019s new emergency hotline hasn\u2019t stopped ringing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since launching its hotline* last fall, the Montreal SPCA has received nearly three times as many calls reporting animal cruelty or neglect.<\/strong> In December and January alone, reports led the Investigations Division to open 288 cases<\/strong>, which is 38% more than in the same period of the previous year.<\/p>\n

Bourbonni\u00e8re is not surprised. \u201cPublic awareness about animal welfare is on the rise. Easier reporting means people contact us more quickly when they see an act of animal cruelty.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
