Should I Let My Cat Out?
This controversial issue often provokes heated discussions among cat lovers. The Montreal SPCA does not recommend letting your cat roam freely outdoors, particularly in view of the impact this causes on wildlife (both prey and wild predators, who suffer unfair competition from domestic felines).
If, despite the risks, you do decide to let your cat go outside unsupervised, we offer a few essential tips and recommendations to ensure their safety and limit the negative consequences.
- Cats who go outdoors are more likely to suffer injuries, caused especially by fights with other cats, predators or accidents involving vehicles. They are also more likely to be infected by parasites or viruses. Veterinary fees are therefore generally higher for cats who go outside.
- Cats kill between 100 and 350 million birds every year in Canada. Around the world, cats have contributed to the extinction of several species of small animals.
- Make sure your feline is spayed or neutered and has a tag and microchip with your current contact information.
- Treat your cat for parasites and keep their vaccinations up to date.
- Make sure they’re wearing a quick-release collar so that it comes off if they get stuck somewhere.
- Equip their collar with a GPS tracker—it’s a handy tool for locating your friend!
- If you move, keep your cat indoors for a few days and gradually introduce them to the new surroundings by going out with them the first few times.
- Set aside an amount in your budget to treat your cat in the event of injury or infection.
- If the forecast is for bad weather, keep your cat in. The same goes before you head to bed or leave the house.
- Various devices on the market reduce predation, such as CatBib-type bibs, Birdsbesafe-type collar covers, bells, etc.
Your cat can lead an exciting life even if they don’t go outside! Use a harness for supervised outings or set up a “catio.” You can offer them hiding places, high-perched observation spots, a scratching post, interactive toys and catnip. And don’t forget the snuggles!
