Helping the most vulnerable

It’s not uncommon for us to receive animals in terrible condition following reports and investigations, or as part of our daily shelter operations.

These are the cases that place the greatest demand on our resources. Every minute counts for these animals in distress, and the dedicated care we provide plays a major role in their chances of survival.

Valentin: A broken heart that we’re putting back together, one piece at a time

As shocking as it may seem, this sweet dog was beaten right in the street in front of witnesses. His family, who was supposed to protect and care for him, struck him repeatedly in front of horrified onlookers. Valentin was then left lying on the ground, not moving.

Acting on a complaint we received, one of our animal protection officers quickly intervened and seized Valentin. He was examined at our clinic, and all the notes and photos documenting his condition were added to the investigation file. This tall two-year-old pup sadly displays behaviours that testify to the abuse he has suffered. He’s currently in a foster home, where he’s finally learning the basics through positive reinforcement training.

Investigations Division: rescuing animals in distress

The Montreal SPCA’s Investigations Division is tasked with enforcing the laws that protect animals. Its involvement in cases involving regulatory offences is supported by the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ).

However, it’s public donations that enable the SPCA to fund the Investigations Division’s enforcement of the Criminal Code, which applies to the most serious cases of cruelty or neglect. We need your help to take abused animals under our wing and ensure that investigations are carried out diligently.
