The Montreal SPCA is inviting the public to sign and share this petition recently introduced at the National Assembly calling on the government of Québec to ban declawing of cats as well as tail docking, ear cropping and devocalization of dogs.
The Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) is currently reviewing its animal welfare regulations. This petition presents a unique opportunity to ask our government to act without further delay to ban these practices, which are already prohibited in most other Canadian provinces.
The term “declawing” is misleading because the surgery in question consists in completely amputating of the third phalanx of each of a cat’s toes.
It would be the equivalent, for a human, of having the last knuckle removed from all ten fingertips!
