Four good reasons to adopt at the Montreal SPCA

So, you’ve decided to add a new animal member to your family? Adopting a companion animal from a shelter will change the life of an abandoned animal waiting for her new forever home!

Here are four good reasons to adopt your new friend in a shelter:

1. You’re giving a second chance
Or even a third! Most of the animals at the Montreal SPCA have not been abandoned because of their behaviour. Instead, they were given up because of a change in their home situation, such as a divorce, a move or a new baby, or because their family couldn’t assume the care of a companion animal.

2- You can adopt an older animal
While it’s true that kittens and puppies are undeniably adorable, older animals are extremely lovable companions, whose biggest hope is to find a forever home. And there are many advantages to adopting a mature animal, too. For instance, older animals have a more stable personality, know how to relax and typically require less training. They have a lot of love to give!

3. You’ll see that adoption is the most economic option
Adopting an animal from a shelter usually costs less than buying one or even getting one for free! If you add up the costs of vaccines, sterilization, microchipping and a health guarantee, you’ll see that adoption is often the most economic option.

For example, at the Montreal SPCA, adopting a dog who is eight months old or older costs $550. This fee covers:

  • Sterilization
  • The first basic vaccine and the rabies vaccine
  • Treatment for parasites
  • Microchipping

4- You know what you’re getting
You won’t get any nasty surprises! We will tell you all about our boarder’s characteristics, his good points as well as what he needs to work on, and his health issues, if any. This information will help you decide whether the animal is a good fit with your lifestyle.

Our team takes the time to get to know all the animals that stay with us at the Montreal SPCA, particularly our volunteers, who spend time with our animals every day!
